For the third straight year, Friends' Central won the Friends Schools League Girls' Lacrosse Championship. On Tuesday, May 16th, playing on their home field, FCS hosted League rival Germantown Friends in a rematch of a regular season 10-5 Phoenix win. Seniors Lorna MacFarlane and Sophie Berger led in points with four each and classmate Hannah Posencheg got in on the scoring action with one goal while dominating in the midfield with seven caused turnovers and two ground balls.
The Phoenix struggled early, dropping passes they usually don't and forcing offensive opportunities that were unsuccessful. GFS' goalie, Corin Grady stood tall in the cage, turning away the bulk of the Phoenix early chances. As the FCS offense settled in, the senior leadership set the tone with strong contributions from the freshman class. Brynne Menen scored twice, Aliza Sall had one crucial goal in transition to swing the momentum the Phoenix' way and Thea Volpp had two assists.
Senior goal keeper Jess Goralski had eleven saves, six ground balls and broke up two GFS offensive plays. Stellar defensive play over long stretches was crucial in building the win. The defense has improved week to week, but was excellent yesterday in allowing only three goals.
Congratulations to the Phoenix and especially to the seniors, Lorna, Hannah, Hayden, Sophie, Sam and Jess, their leadership set the tone and their execution sealed the win.
In other League play, Friends' Central hosted George School in a Semi-Final Baseball game on Tuesday, May 16th. George School opened up the scoring in the top of the 4th on a two out, two run error. The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of the 5th on a solo home run by second baseman Tom Kumar and an RBI double by pitcher Ken Rodriguez off of FCS Senior starting pitcher Alec Andrews.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the 5th, the FCS offense exploded for six runs. After Junior third baseman Dane Greisiger lead off the inning with a line out to the pitcher, Junior Nick Tuverson lined a single to left. Senior Robbie Winward followed with an infield single. Senior Ben Kenney then lined a double to left scoring Tuverson. Sophomore Mark Masi scored Winward on an RBI ground out to first. Seniors Cullen Gilroy and Chris Annas then walked to load the bases for Andrews. Andrews laced a single to left, plating Kenney and Gilroy and tying the game. Sophomore Catcher Ben Kollender topped an infield single which scored Annas. Greisger then scorched an RBI single to left to score Andrews. Tuverson, in relief of Andrews, shut down the Cougars in the 6th and the Phoenix tacked on an insurance run on an RBI single by Annas in the bottom of the 6th to conclude the scoring. Tuverson retired the Cougars 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th securing the semi - final victory and improving his record to 5-0 on the season.
