Madison Smith led her team yesterday afternoon against visiting Westtown and joined the elite 1,000-point club.
"If I see an open floor in front of me I look to drive to the basket," said Smith following her team's contest against visiting Westtown.
Needing just seven points, Smith was held in check for most of the first half. Needing just two points to join the exclusive club at Friends' Central, she had a couple of opportunities late in the first half only to see her shots rattle in and out.
With time winding down in the first half, it seemed only fitting that when Smith collected the rebound and turned to head up the court, she saw a clear path to the basket. As she has done many times, Smith took advantage of the opening and headed straight to the hoop. As the clock was about to hit 0:00, she threw up a high lay-up that kissed off the backboard and through the net to give her the milestone basket she has dreamed of since she first started playing basketball.
"This means everything," said Smith. "I did not even realize that was for my 1,000th point. I saw the open floor and went for the basket."
Smith added, "My coaches and family have meant everything and I could not have done this without them."
"She (Madison) certainly did it in dramatic fashion," said Phill Annas, who has coached Madison throughout her career at Friends' Central. "Nobody deserves this more than her. She has worked so hard and I am happy for her and her family."
Smith became just the seventh female and 14th player in school history to reach the milestone.
